Turmeric-Tea

Turmeric Tea with Fresh Turmeric Root

From ancient times turmeric or haldi has been used for healing many diseases. Hence it is called ‘mother of all healing’ in Ayurveda. In Ayurveda turmeric is used to balance tridosha (i.e Vata dosha, Pitta dosha, and Kapha dosha), the three energies that govern the function of our body and mind.

The plant is native to the Indian subcontinent. Turmeric root is used both fresh like ginger and in its dried powdered form. It has a warm, earthy, peppery bitter taste. Turmeric makes an incredibly healing and delicious drink when combined with ginger, cinnamon, lemon juice, and honey.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoon sliced fresh turmeric root or ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoon sliced fresh ginger root or ½ teaspoon ginger powder
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon peel
  • Few whole black pepper or ¼ teaspoon black pepper powder
  • Few cinnamon sticks or ½ teaspoon cinnamon powder
  • 2 cups filtered water
  • Lemon juice as needed
  • Honey as needed

Instructions:

  1. Crush the ginger root slices, black pepper, and cinnamon separately or together. Skip this step if using ground or dried versions.
  2. Heat water in a pot or saucepan. Add turmeric slices, along with lemon peels, crushed ginger, and crushed black pepper and cinnamon.
  3. Cover the lid and simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Once done, strain the tea through a fine sieve into cups.
  5. Add lemon juice and honey as needed and mix well.

Notes:

  • Fresh turmeric and ginger add a vibrant flavor. However, ground or dried versions could be used as well.
  • A little fat like coconut oil, almond oil or even butter could be added to the drink.
  • Storage: It can be easily stored for 2-3 days in the refrigerator. Keep the strained tea in an airtight jar. Just before serving, heat it up, mix lemon juice and honey.
